Resumen

DINORAH SALGADO, Paula  y  CARPIO, Jorge. Superexplotación, Informalidad y Precariedad: Reflexiones a partir del trabajo en la industria de la confección. Estud. trab. [online]. 2017, n.54, pp.55-89. ISSN 0327-5744.

During the last quarter century garment industry witnessed two contrasting trends, in line with the behaviour of the industry. The fixed exchange rate period was characterized by a contraction of the industry accompanied by a relative increase in outsourcing to unregistered workshops. While the post-convertibility period was characterized by the expansion of the industrial sector, that for apparel implied an increase in the exploitation in such productive units. The form of exploitation known by media as “slave labor” date from the nineties and was intensified after the growth phase initiated after the 2001 crisis. This article deals with different dimensions that relate to the composition of work, in order to analyze the scope of the concepts “precariousness”, “informality” and “overexploitation” to characterize the case under study. Based on population surveys, the following variables are analyzed: length of the working day, registration status, labor income and place of birth. In addition, other variables such as occupational category are incorporated as well for the purpose of controlling the original relations. As a result, a characterization of the population under study -and present in population statisticsis reached. This data informs about the scale of thte phenomenon.

Palabras clave : Overexploitation; Precariousness; Garment industry; Migration.
