Robin C. Whatley
(1936 - 2016)

El 4 de junio de 2016 falleció en Gales, Reino Unido, el Doctor Robin Charles Whatley, quien a partir de 1970 visitara repetidamente la Argentina, realizando numerosas contribuciones al conocimiento de los ostrácodos fósiles y actuales del país y regiones adyacentes.
Nació en Hawkhurts, Kent, el 2 de diciembre de 1936 y realizó sus estudios secundarios en la "Sir Norton Knatchbull Grammar School", prestigiosa institución creada en Ashford, Kent, en el Siglo XVII. Aunque el deseo familiar de que prestara servicios militares en la India, objetivo al cual fue dirigida parte de la educación que recibió en su infancia, no se concretó, tuvo oportunidad en 1949 de realizar una visita a la India y Paquistán acompañando a su abuelo materno, un oficial retirado que había estado destacado en esas regiones, en un viaje que le resultaría inolvidable por las experiencias vividas. A esa época de su infancia y su juventud se remontan, su formación católica, que mantendría toda su vida, y sus conocimientos de lengua "kurda" y de lenguas clásicas como el griego y el latín, evidenciados estos últimos en su insistencia por el uso de "Cainozoico" (griego "Καινο + ζοοσ" = "nueva vida", según decía aceptando la "C" pese a que no tiene equivalente en griego) en lugar de "Cenozoico" (del griego "Κενο + ζοοσ" = " vacío de vida"). Al respecto comentaba, irónicamente, que tal vez su vida en el mundo actual hubiese sido más fácil sin tales conocimientos.
Luego de graduarse en 1954 se dedicó a la administración de un campo, tareas que se vieron interrumpidas por su incorporación al "National Service", lo cual lo llevó en 1955-1957 a Chipre y Egipto. A su regreso se dedicó, entre 1957 y 1959, a actividades de pesca en Christchurch, Hampshire, costa sur de Inglaterra, haciendo uso de una embarcación de su propiedad. Posteriormente estudió en la Universidad de Hull, donde tomó cursos de geología, zoología y anatomía comparada y donde nació su interés por la micropaleontología. En 1962 se graduó en Geología y Zoología con "First Class Honours" y en los años posteriores realizó su doctorado, mediante el apoyo económico del Departamento de Investigaciones Científicas e Industriales (DSIR), graduándose en 1966 con una tesis sobre Ostrácodos Callovianos y Oxfordianos de Gran Bretaña, que fue calificada excelente por dos eminentes científicos, P. Sylvester-Bradley y D. Donovan. En sus años de estudios universitarios, en 1964, participó de una expedición al Este de Groenlandia, dirigida por R. Marris y vinculada a estudios de J.H. Callomon, durante la cual realizó secciones estratigráficas y coleccionó amonites en el Bajociano-Calloviano.
Su inclinación por el contacto con la naturaleza, la pesca y la caza lo llevaron, según relataba, a preferir Gales con respecto a Cambridge como destino post-doctoral. Así en 1965 se incorporó al Departamento de Geología e Instituto de Ciencias de la Tierra de la Universidad de Gales, en Aberystwyth, donde fue designado "Assistant Lecturer" en Geología, para enseñar Paleontología y Estratigrafía y dirigir una Maestría en Microplaoentología con énfasis en Ostrácoda. Adicionalmente debía realizar estudios sobre Ostrácodos actuales en la Bahía de Cardigan, haciendo uso de una embarcación de investigación del Departamento de Geología. En 1967 fue promovido a Lecturer, en 1976 a Senior Lecturer, en 1985 a Reader y en 1988 a profesor, para ser finalmente designado Profesor Emérito. En 2004 se retiró, pero siguió contribuyendo al avance de los temas de su especialidad.
Durante sus años de docencia universitaria enseñó un amplio espectro de temas, desde Estratigrafía a Evolución de Vertebrados, y la amplitud de sus intereses lo llevaron incluso a dirigir un grupo multidisciplinario focalizado en aspectos generales de la Teoría del Caos y en su aplicación a diferentes disciplinas científicas. En su caso particular se interesó en su aplicación a la relación entre evolución y entropía y su extensión a la evolución de ecosistemas en el espacio y en el tiempo. A través de esos años resultó de fundamental importancia su contribución al programa de MSc en Micropaleontología, con especial referencia a los Ostrácodos. Así supervisó a estudiantes de maestría y doctorado - con un número record de 64 a principios de la década de 1990 -, muchos de los cuales bajo su guía contribuyeron significativamente al desarrollo del conocimiento de diferentes aspectos de los Ostracoda fósiles y vivientes.
El Dr. Whatley vino por primera vez a la Argentina en agosto de 1970, por iniciativa del Dr. Arturo J. Amos y con el apoyo del "British Council, Overseas Developoment Agency" y del CONICET, y se desempeñó hasta agosto de 1973 como Profesor Invitado de Micropaleontología en la Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata. Allí contribuyó a la formación de un laboratorio de Micropaleontología y de alumnos y graduados en el estudio de ostrácodos fósiles.
Tuve oportunidad de relacionarme con él inmediatamente luego de su arribo y de hacer con él y el Dr. G.E.G. Westermann un viaje de estudios al Jurásico de la Cuenca Neuquina en octubre de ese mismo año. Posteriormente, en marzo-abril de 1973 haríamos un extenso viaje por toda la región cordillerana de las provincias de Río Negro, Chubut y Santa Cruz. En ambos casos Robin participó con entusiasmo, coleccionando muestras para microplaeontología en afloramientos del Jurásico, Cretácico y Terciario y de ostrácodos actuales en cada laguna o curso de agua que se presentaba en el camino, con una red que tenía siempre al alcance de la mano. Entre muchos otros recuerdos lo tengo presente en un anochecer a campo abierto de otoño de 1973, sobre la margen norte del lago Cardiel, asando unas truchas que había pescado mientras esperábamos que secase parte del barro, debido al tiempo lluvioso, que mantenía detenido el vehículo en el que viajábamos.
Durante los tres años que estuvo en la Argentina recorrió todo el país y coleccionó materiales para sus estudios en unidades del Mesozoico y Cenozoico y de aguas continentales y del litoral y sublitoral de la costa atlántica desde la Bahía de Samborombón hasta Ushuaia. Adicionalmente también realizó colecciones en la Provincia de Magallanes, Chile y en las islas Malvinas y en los cordones litorales del Holoceno del Este de la Provincia de Buenos Aires. En años posteriores, durante las décadas de 1980 y 1990, visitó la Argentina en varias oportunidades. Participó activamente del 4th International Congress on Jurassic Stratigraphy and Geology que se realizó en Mendoza en Octubre de1994, colaborando incluso en la edición de las Guías de Campo que fueron editadas por la Asociación Geológica Argentina y la Dirección Nacional del Servicio Geológico. También recibió en la Universidad de Gales a varios graduados de universidades de nuestro país que realizaron estudios de doctorado o post-doctorado, en muchos casos como Becarios Externos del CONICET, y continuó colaborando con varios investigadores argentinos. Sus colecciones de ostrácodos actuales de la región fueron ampliadas con materiales de la Antártida y del Mar de Scotia que le fueron cedidos por el British Antarctic Survey. Muestras adicionales de la plataforma continental e incluso del Uruguay y sur de Brasil le fueron facilitadas por el Servicio de Hidrografía Naval, gracias al apoyo del entonces Capitán de Fragata A. C. Lara. Estas colecciones y su colaboración con numerosos investigadores de la región dieron lugar a una serie de publicaciones en diferentes medios científicos internacionales, pese a que a partir de la década de 1980 intentó sin éxito que sus trabajos fueran dados a conocer en las publicaciones del Museo de La Plata. Al agradecer en 1995 su designación como Miembro Correspondiente de la Asociación Geológica Argentina escribía "todas mis visitas a Argentina, desde aquella primera en 1970, me han aportado gran enriquecimiento intelectual y todo esto como resultado de haber podido trabajar en colaboración con tanta gente valiosa y en especial con muchos brillantes jóvenes investigadores".
Durante su estadía en le Argentina de 1970 -1973, Robin desarrolló un profundo afecto por el país y su gente, que mantuvo durante toda su vida y que lo llevó incluso a leer y a apreciar el "Martin Fierro". Decía entonces, con respecto a esa estadía: "I loved every moment of three years I spent with you all. What a great privilege and what a wonderful time" y en 2014 todavía escribía en castellano: "mientras soy inglés, estoy bastante acriollado y una gran parte de mi alma es argentina".
Tal vez por ello siempre buscaba la forma de regresar, aunque más no fuese por unos días y le interesaba recibir noticias sobre la situación del país y la vida de las personas que había conocido. Consideraba que uno de los paisajes únicos de la Argentina se hallaba en la Pampa húmeda, región que la gustaba recorrer y en la que se dedicaba, además de a la pesca y a la colección de materiales para sus estudios, al avistaje de aves, a las que identificaba como un verdadero experto. Sus cartas muchas veces mezclaban partes escritas en inglés con otras en castellano y podían comenzar con un "Old friend" y terminar con un "Vaya con Dios". A principios de la década de 1990 incluso consideró la posibilidad de adquirir un campo y radicarse en el país. Lamentablemente una dolencia cardíaca, que comenzó a aquejarlo a mediados de la década de 1980 y que se fue agravando con el tiempo, limitó sus visitas a nuestro país.
Las primeras investigaciones del Dr. Whatley estuvieron referidas a faunas de ostrácodos del Calloviano y Oxfordiano y posteriormente, se extendieron, mayormente en colaboración con estudiantes de postgrado y colegas, a los ostrácodos de todo el post-Paleozoico y de diferentes regiones del mundo, e.g. Jurásico de Gran Bretaña y de Argentina, Cretácico del norte de África, ambientes continentales y salobres del Cretácico del subsuelo de Alberta, Canadá, Mesozoico no-marino de América del Sur, Cretácico intertrapeano del Deccan, Terciario continental de las cabeceras del Amazonas, Terciario marino de Patagonia, Plio-Pleistoceno del Mar del Norte y del Norte de Francia, Mioceno de Korea, ambientes marinos del Terciario-Reciente de Australasia, ambientes no-marinos del Pleistoceno y Reciente de Patagonia, Cenozoico del Banco Burwood, región costera y de plataforma de Argentina, ambientes marinos y no marinos de Brasil, aguas someras y profundas de China y del Indo-Pacifico. En la década de 1970 comenzó su interés por las faunas oceánicas en relación con el estudio de faunas del Terciario y Cuaternario de sitios del DSDP de los Océanos Pacífico, Indico, Atlántico, Ártico y de Australasia.
Todos estos estudios, referidos a ostrácodos no marinos y marinos de aguas someras y profundas y de ambientes de arrecifes, abarcaron aspectos de sistemática, morfología, evolución, variabilidad genética y composición cromosómica, ecología, biogeografía, con especial referencia a distribución, dispersión y rutas de migración, estratigrafía y cronología.
Tal como fue destacado en ocasión de ser designado Miembro Honorario de la Micropaleontological Society, su importante producción científica atraviesa toda la columna estratigráfica y cubre toda la superficie del globo. Los aportes de Robin y sus alumnos han sido de trascendencia para el conocimiento de las faunas de ostrácodos de aguas profundas de todas las cuencas oceánicas. Así ha documentado la diversidad e relaciones de las faunas de ostrácodos en ambientes oceánicos del presente y del pasado geológico permitiendo por primera vez apreciar las relaciones evolutivas entre las faunas de plataforma, relativamente bien documentadas, y las faunas de los fondos oceánicos.
Todos estos aportes al conocimiento de los ostrácodos fósiles y vivientes se encuentran plasmados en varias monografías y libros y más de 300 trabajos, de los cuales unos 50 se refieren a áreas y/o temas de la Argentina y regiones vecinas. En 1988 organizo, junto con su esposa, Caroline Maybury, el Xth International Symposium on Ostracoda, cuyos resultados incluyó en un volumen, bajo el título "Ostracoda and Global Events" (1990). Posteriormente en 1994 organizó el simposio "ODP and the Marine Biosphere", cuyos trabajos fueron incluidos en el volumen "Microfossils and Oceanic Environments" (1996).
Robin formó parte del Editorial Board del Treatise of Invertebrate Paleontology y participó en su conversión editorial a los cánones de la era digital. En 1991 fue nombrado Miembro Correspondiente de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales, en 1995 de la Asociación Geológica Argentina y en 2004 Miembro Honorario de la Micropalaeontological Society. Colaboró con la revista Ameghiniana de la Asociación Paleontológica Argentina, para la que sostuvo la opinión de que debía seguir siendo publicada en idioma castellano con preferencia al inglés.
Pese a las limitaciones físicas que padeció en sus últimos años mantuvo la cantidad y calidad de su producción científica y al finalizar 2015 se mostraba satisfecho de haber podido concluir tres trabajos más, entre ellos una importante contribución, en coautoría, sobre los ostrácodos del Maastrichtiano y Daniano de la del norte de la Patagonia. También pudo seguir disfrutando de la caza y la pesca en cercanías de su propiedad, "The Briars" haciendo uso de su bote y en la compañía de sus labradores, Darwin, Lyell, Wallace y Huxley.
Poseedor de una personalidad fuerte, entusiasta y alegre, Robin fue un amigo generoso, siempre dispuesto a ayudar, que amo a la Argentina y a su gente. La casa que compartió con su esposa Caroline siempre estuvo abierta para recibir a sus amigos y colegas de la Argentina. Su ausencia será sentida por todos aquellos que tuvimos el privilegio de conocerlo y tratarlo. Nos quedan sus contribuciones científicas, investigadores que siguen sus pasos y sobre todo muchos recuerdos inolvidables. Solo me queda decir: "Old friend: Vaya con Dios".
