Abstract: A short description of the entomological collection of the Natural History Museum of Salta, Argentina, is provided, with a listing of the type specimens held here (34 holotypes, 6 syntypes, 9 allotypes, and 55 paratypes).

Introduction

In 1999 the Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Salta inherited a large proportion of the Entomological collection that once belonged to the Instituto de Investigaciones Entomológicas de Salta (INESalt). That Institute functioned from 1988 to 1995 in the city of Rosario de Lerma, and entomologists M. A. Fritz (specialist on Hymenoptera, Mutilidae), G. J. Williner (specialist on Neuroptera), and M. J. Viana (specialist on Coleoptera) conducted their studies there.
The objective of this report is to make the contents of this collection known, so that specialists on the groups it holds can count it among their reference collections. Its main value lies in the type specimens it holds, including 40 primary (34 holotypes, 6 syntypes), and 64 secondary (9 allotypes, 55 paratypes) types of the orders Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Neuroptera, Coleoptera, and Diptera. It also includes over 15,000 specimens from several orders and families, mainly from NW Argentina and also from other regions of the country as well as neighboring countries (Bolivia and Paraguay).

Material and Methods

A short description of the entomological collection of the Natural History Museum of Salta, Argentina is provided, followed by a list of the type specimens arranged alphabetically by order, family, and genus. Data provided for each type specimen include: species name as originally described, reference to original publication, type category, conservation status in parenthesis, followed by collection data exactly as they appear in the label/s; italics indicate hand written labels. Sex is indicated only when it is included in the labels. If the species is currently considered a synonym or has been transferred to a different genus, is indicated under remarks.

Results

The best represented orders and families in the main collection, mostly pinned, are: DICTYOPTERA: Mantidae; DIPTERA: Acroceridae, Asilidae, Bombyliidae, Calliphoridae, Conopidae, Culicidae, Otitidae, Platystomatidae, Stratyomiidae, Syrphidae, Tabanidae, Tephritidae; COLEOPTERA: Cantharidae, Carabidae, Cerambicidae, Cicindellidae, Chrysomelidae, Curculionidae, Buprestidae, Elateridae, Erotylidae, Histeridae, Meloidae, Lampyridae, Lucanidae, Passalidae, Tenebrionidae, Scarabaeidae; HEMIPTERA: Alydidae, Anthocoridae, Belostomatidae, Cicadidae Coreidae, Colobathristidae, Cydnidae, Enicocephalidae, Fulgoridae, Lygaeidae, Miridae, Nabidae, Pentatomidae, Phloeidae, Phymatidae, Pyrrhochoridae, Reduviidae, Rhopalidae; HYMENOPTERA: Apidae, Eumenidae, Ichneumonidae, Megachilidae, Mutilidae, Pompilidae, Sphecidae, Tiphiidae, Vespidae; LEPIDOPTERA: Acraeidae, Actiidae, Arctiidae, Brassolidae, Danaidae, Heliconiidae, Hesperidae, Ithomidae, Lymantridae, Morphidae, Nymphalidae, Papilionidae, Pieridae, Rhiodinidae, Saturnidae, Satyridae, Sphingidae; ORTHOPTERA: Acrididae, Proscopidae, Tettigonidae. Included are also several series of layered cotton-beds with unprocessed, unidentified insects, mostly Diptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, and Orthoptera.
