ABSTRACT. The type specimens of Sarcophagidae housed in the collection of Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales "Bernardino Rivadavia" (MACN) are listed. A total of 82 type specimens were examined. The types belong to 33 nominal species of Sarcophaginae described by E. E. Blanchard (25 species), J. Brèthes (3), H. Lopes (4), and T. Pape (1). For each taxon, information on the labels, original publications and conditions of the specimens are given.

INTRODUCTION

The family Sarcophagidae has a worldwide distribution and is one of the most biologically diverse families of calyptrate flies, containing sarcosaprophagous and parasitic species (Lopes, 1969; Pape, 1996). According to Pape (1996) more than 2500 species have been described, and approximately more than 600 of them are Neotropical.
The type collection of Sarcophagidae in the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales "Bernardino Rivadavia" (MACN) is the greatest repository of type-material of this family in Argentina, and represents a significant resource for researchers interested in Neotropical Sarcophagidae.
The information concerning type materials deposited in institutions is useful in taxonomic researches and as a preparation for databasing the collections. These listings have been recommended by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Recommendation 72F.4, ICZN 1999).
With the aim of updating the information on types of Sarcophagidae, this study presents a list of the type specimens deposited in the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales"Bernardino Rivadavia".

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The entomological collection of the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales "Bernardino Rivadavia" houses 82 type specimens of Sarcophagidae belonging to 33 nominal species of Sarcophaginae described by E. E. Blanchard, J. Brèthes, H. Lopes, and T. Pape. The species were alphabetically ordered according to their original combination. For each taxon, information on the labels, original publications, and conditions of the specimens are given. The information on the specimens has been taken from labels and compared with original descriptions.
Bibliographic references of original descriptions include year, author/s, journal, volumen, and page numbers.
Type categories and number of specimens are indicated followed by collection data (country, province or state, locality, date and collector). The code number of the Colección Nacional de Entomología (MACN-En) is given in brackets.
Labels are cited verbatim, lines separated by a slash, different labels by double slash and comments are given in brackets.
Remarks are included to describe the conditions of the specimens, the valid names of each taxon, and bibliography referred to synonymy or lectotype designations.
The valid names have been presented according to the classification established by Pape (1996), and the few exceptions are remarked.
