Dear LAJSBA readers, as you might be aware, we have been appointed as Editor (Ernesto Schwarz) and Associate Editor (Diana G. Cuadrado) of the journal for the period 2014-2016, and the publication of the 21-1 Volume is a good excuse to address you for the first time. First of all, we would like to thank the Board of the Asociación Argentina de Sedimentología for honoring us with this gratifying, but at the same time, challenging task. We will work hard to persist in the path that previous editorial teams have set for this journal. That is to say, to continue positioning LAJSBA as one of the more relevant journals for disseminating the sedimentology and basin analysis-related science that is developed in South America. We feel that Volume 21-1 is a nice example of this, having contributions from Brazil, Chile and Argentina, and ranging from Precambrian successions to modern systems.
Speaking of previous editorial teams, we would like to thank former Editor Gonzalo D. Veiga and former Associate Editor Alfonsina Tripaldi for their invaluable work and dedication to this journal during the past five years. Several key changes were introduced during that time in order to adjust to new technology-based demands. Firstly, a complete online-based journal, from the submission and editorial process (through the PPCT Portal, www.ppct.caicyt.gov.ar), all the way to the online publication and repository end (through the SciELO platform, www.scielo.org.ar) was established. Secondly, as print costs and regular mail distribution heavily impacted in the journal's finance, a complete shift into a full digital journal was organized. Last but not least, the journal, as we know it today, has a carefully designed format (including all figures in color!) and we all know the quality of the science we find within.
So, we received the Journal with new, or better to say, renewed challenges: to increase its visibility and periodicity. To address the first issue we will place significant efforts in promoting the benefits of publishing in the Journal all across South America, as well as assuring that LAJSBA reaches a much broader scientific community worldwide. On the other hand, we will develop strategies to generate a greater volume of contributions to the journal in the coming years, which would eventually guarantee a timely periodicity. A few recent achievements and future actions in both key issues can be briefly mentioned in this first contact.
Visibility. We are glad to announce that the full record of LAJSBA (2005-2013) was included in the Scopus database in this the semester of 2014. That is to say that about 80 contributions from the 12 volumes of LAJSBA are now part of this dataset (www.scopus.com). Besides the obvious benefits for individual authors that have seen their “old” papers listed in their Scopus statistics, and therefore available to a much broader community, this data allows analyzing the performance of the Journal as well. In this aspect, we are happy to see that LAJSBA shows an steady rise in the number of citations per year during the 8-year period, suggesting an increased visibility of the science published in our journal. As for future actions, we look forward to include the entire collection of the precursor of LAJSBA, the Revista de la Asociación Argentina de Sedimentología (1995-2004), in the Scopus database, an action that will likely empowered the journal historical performance. Similarly, we expect to be incorporated in other bibliographic databases such as REDALYC, which also serves as a digital library of open access journals (www.redalyc.org).
As for more reasons to publish in LAJSBA, we are pleased to inform that the journal was recently included in the SCImago's Journal and Country Rank (SJR, www.scimagojr.com). This rank, elaborated upon the Scopus database, is increasingly used by governmental institutions to evaluate publications. As the present LAJSBA status within SJR solely considers the 2012 performance, we expect it will escalate as more data from both previous and future collections are included in the historical series.
Periodicity. Following are own experience and other journal policies, we believe that the compilation of thematic-related papers and their publication in special issues might be a means to attract extra contributions to the journal. In this sense, we would like to stimulate colleagues from Argentina and Latin America to plan and propose potential Special Publications to be included in LAJSBA. Individual proposals will be considered, and if accepted, they will be scheduled appropriately. One present advantage of the online-only publication is that we can keep several volumes in progress in our online platform, shortening the time between acceptance and online publication of individual contributions. As for present actions, we have one on-going special issue, dealing with key methodologies and applications of Paleolimnology, with E. Piovano as Guest Editor.
Having said all that, the future of LAJSBA cannot be the result of a few people's efforts. We need all the Argentine and Latin American sedimentological community to engage in its developing. In this context, firstly we would like to thank the colleagues of the Editorial Board, who have renewed their support and commitment to this journal for the next years. Secondly, we will like to thank all our colleagues acting as reviewers. Their job is a fundamental stone in the quality of published papers and we, as Editors, heavily rely in their expertise and their response in reasonable times. Finally, we make a call to our readers: we are looking forward to receive your contributions!
