Locality.Tupinambis teguixin Linnaeus, 1758 (Squamata: Teiidae). Brazil, state of Piauí, municipality of Barras, (4°14’40” S, 42°17’40” W, 70 m a.s.l.). Collector: Ronildo Alves Benício. In 09 July 2011 at 10:30 an adult specimen (SVL 2750 mm) was caught foraging in an open area with vegetation characteristic of transition Caatinga - Cerrado, and deposited in the Coleção Herpetológica Jorge Jim (CHJJ 0666) of the Laboratório de Ecologia da Universidade Federal do Piauí (UFPI) – Campus Picos.

Comments.— The genus Tupinambis Daudin, 1803 occurs in most part of South America east of the Andes, southward reaching northern Patagonian, in Argentina (Ávila-Pires 1995; Cei and Scolaro 1982). Contains four species: Tupinambis longilineus Ávila- Pires 1995, T. palustris Manzani and Abe 2002, T. quadrilineatus Manzani and Abe 1997, and T. teguixin (Linnaeus 1758) (Bérnils and Costa 2012).

According to Ávila-Pires (1995), the species Tupinambis teguixin (Fig. 1) occurs in forests and open areas, throughout Amazonia, including French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. It is known in Brazil from the states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and São Paulo.

Figure 1. Adult specimen of Tupinambis teguixin (CHJJ 0666) from municipality of Barras, state of Piauí, Brazil. Photo: R. A. Benício.

Identification was based on its colour pattern, presence of a single loreal scale, supraoculars in contact with supraciliaries, supernumerary antegular fold present, 13 lamellae under fourth finger, 32 under fourth toe, and 21 pores femorales.

This is the first record of Tupinambis teguixin for the state of Piauí, northeastern Brazil, extending the distribution in approximately 290 km southeast (airline) from the nearest previously known record (municipality Arari, Maranhão) (03º27’13”S 44º46’48”W) (Fig. 2).
