Introduction

The first taxonomic studies concerning the fungi with hysterothecioid ascomata from Argentina and Chile were published by Rehm (1899) and Spegazzini (1880; 1881a, b; 1887; 1902; 1908; 1909; 1910; 1912; 1921). Some species of Hysteriaceae and Mytilinidiaceae were recorded in contributions that were carried out by Catania (2009), Mujica Richatt & Vergara Castillo (1980), Romero (1994) and Rosato (2007). Since 1997 particular studies of hysteriaceous genera in Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego (Argentina y Chile) were published by the authors of this checklist.

This catalogue includes species and infraespecific taxa in eleven genera of the families Hysteriaceae and Mytilinidiaceae from Argentina and Chile that were studied previously by the authors of this contribution.

Classification at generic level and above follows the currently 10th edition of Dictionary of the Fungi (Kirk et al., 2008). Recent results of molecular phylogenetic research of the hysteriaceous bitunicate Ascomycota were presented by Boehm et al. (2009a, b) where they include taxonomic changes.

Material and Methods

The genera of fungi are listed alphabetically, as well as the accepted species (indicated in bold) under each generic heading. Information about synonyms is presented after the name in current use. Species being synonyms or transferred to other genera are also listed (indicated in italic). We included all the type specimens studied by us. Authors' abbreviations follow Authors of Plants Names (Brummitt & Powell, 1992). Each taxon is accompanied by information about Argentinean and Chilean distribution, habitat, substratum and a list of literature citations that provide descriptions, illustrations, identification keys and/or recent suggested taxonomical changes. The cited herbaria in this checklist are those mentioned in the scant information obtained from the literature together with those that loaned the type specimens for this study.

The information about synonyms of infrageneric taxa was obtained from Barr (1975, 1990); Boehm et al. (2009b); Goree (1974); Index Fungorum - www.indexfungorum.org - (2011) and Zogg (1962).

The initials used in the distribution of the Argentinean specimens are: BA ( Provincia de Buenos Aires), CA (Provincia de Catamarca), CH (Provincia de Chubut), MZ (Provincia de Mendoza), NQ (Provincia de Neuquén), RN (Provincia de Río Negro), SC (Provincia de Santa Cruz), SJ (Provincia de San Juan), SL (Provincia de San Luis), TF (Provincia de Tierra del Fuego , Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur) and TU (Provincia de Tucumán); and for the Chilean specimens are: V (Quinta Región de Valparaíso), VII (Séptima Región del Maule), VIII (Octava Región del Bío-Bío), X (Décima Región de los Lagos), XII (Duodécima Región de Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena), XIII (Región Metropolitana), XIV (Decimocuarta Región de los Ríos).

Comments: The synonymy of this species is based on Lorenzo & Messuti (1998), Messuti & Lorenzo (2007) and Zogg (1962). Boehm et al. (2009b) placed the genus Glonium outside of Hysteriaceae, in the family Gloniaceae. Recently, Mugambi & Huhndorf (2009) proposed a new genus (Anteaglonium) outside the Hysteriales but within the Pleosporales, to accommodate A. abbreviatum as a synonym of G. abbreviatum. The genus Anteaglonium was listed as genera incertae sedis by Lumbsch & Huhndorf (2010).

Conclusions

As a consequence of this checklist a total of 35 hysteriaceous taxa were recorded: Gloniella (8), Gloniopsis (5), Glonium (4), Glyphium (1), Hysterobrevium (1), Hysterographium (6), Hysterium (4), Mytilinidium (1), Oedohysterium (1) and Psiloglonium (4); from them, 16 taxa were registered from Argentina, 13 taxa from Chile, and 6 taxa from both countries. The known distributions of these fungi are probably a small portion of their actual distributions and the need for more collection of Hysteriaceae and Mytilinidiaceae is paramount.
