AOL was created in 1984 as an independent enterprise by professors from the School of Dentistry at the University of Buenos Aires, with the aim of publishing dental research conducted primarily in Latin America to reach the profession worldwide. Accordingly, it was decided to publish it in English.

AOL has been indexed in MEDLINE/PubMed and LILACS from Volume 1.

Since the beginning, the editor-in-chief has been Prof. Dr. Rómulo Luis Cabrini.
Originally and currently published three times a year, the journal was only published twice a year from 1987 to 2005 (Volumes 4 to 18) due to financial constraints.

In 2007, CAICYT-CONICET incorporated AOL into the Core Scientific Journals of Argentina.
In 2008, the Argentine Association of Dental Research (Sociedad Argentina de Investigación Odontológica, SAIO) incorporated the journal as its official organ. In order to encourage and raise the level of dental research, AOL offers SAIO members advice on publishing their research, and translation services.

Theme and Scope of the Magazine: The objective of Acta Odontológica Latinoamericana is to offer the scientific community an adequate means for the international dissemination of research work, preferably carried out in Latin America, within the dental field and closely related areas. It publishes original works on basic, clinical and epidemiological research, both in the biological field and in the area of ​​dental materials and special techniques. The publication of clinical works is considered as long as they have original content and are not mere presentations of cases or series. Bibliographic review works are not accepted, although editors may request reviews of topics of particular interest. Brief Communications, within AOL's area of ​​interest, may be considered for publication. Only previously unpublished works are accepted, which may not later be published in another medium without express consent of the editors.
