Form and preparation of manuscripts

1. Editorial scope and policy
The journal Sociedad y Religión. Sociología, Antropología e Historia de la religión en el Cono Sur is a publication of the Society, Culture and Religion Area of the CONICET’s Centre for Labour Studies and Research (CEIL-PIETTE). It appears biannually and is indexed in Latindex and the CAICYT’s Argentine Basic Core of Scientific Journals.
The journal accepts articles by researchers from all over the world who meet its formal conditions and academic requirements. Only original works that have gone through the double-blind peer review process will be approved for publication.
Texts will be selected according to the degree of relevance of their subject matter and the perspective addressed. In this sense the journal aims to provide a space for the publication of articles that represent an innovation in the field of scientific research. Articles limiting themselves to the testing of a theory or straightforward description of an object will not therefore be accepted as research articles, but may be sent as short articles.
The journal encourages an interdisciplinary approach to the subjects studied, on condition that it displays proper knowledge and use of the disciplines involved. The analysis of empirical objects that explain various aspects of religious phenomena in Latin America over and above theoretical or merely speculative research will also be given priority.
Finally, the Editorial Committee reserves the right to include approved articles in whatever issue of the journal it sees fit. Authors will be responsible for the scientific content and viewpoints of their works, which may not coincide with those of the editors.

2. Format and preparation of manuscripts

Articles sent to Sociedad y Religión. Sociología, Antropología e Historia de la religión en el Cono Sur must meet the conditions outlined below. Should these not be met, the article will not be included in the review process.

  1. They must be written in Spanish or Portuguese, and revised by native speakers of these languages in the event that the author is not a native-speaker of these languages. They must be sent to the journal’s e-mail address as an attachment in .doc or .rtf format.
  2. An autograph copy of the Assignment of Rights, signed by the author must be sent together with the original.
  3. The material must be previously unpublished. Works must not have been submitted simultaneously to another review or publishing process. The journal will not accept translations that have not been commissioned by the editors. Works presented at scientific meetings will be accepted, provided that they involve substantial reworking, to be indicated in a footnote.
  4. The journal publishes research articles, short articles, reviews and thesis summaries.

2.1 . General rules

2.1.1 . Research articles
Works will be submitted in A4 format, Times New Roman 12, with 1.5 line spacing, and default margins set by the word processor in use: upper and lower: 2.5cm; left and right: 3cm. The length shall not exceed 25 pages, including all Bibliographic References and appendices. The work must not disclose the authors’ names and care shall be taken that the wording of the text does not reveal their identities in order to ensure the impartiality of the assessment.

They must be accompanied by a cover page indicating: the author’s name, the institution’s address, telephone and fax number(s), and e-mail address.

The title of the article must be in both its original language and English, and must be preceded by an abstract of between 100 to 200 words in both languages. Three to five keywords or descriptors should be placed at the end of each abstract. Abstracts must provide an account of the structure of the work, indicating its purposes, questions, methodology and main conclusions. Submissions with a theoretical framework, must indicate this, together with any hypotheses, before the methodology.

Works must be clearly divided into properly subtitled sections (and subsections if needed). The Introduction, Conclusion, References and Sources sections are not to be numbered. Foreign words or phrases should be in italics, and any technical terms should be written with single quotation marks.

Tables, figures and graphs should be incorporated in the text, and properly numbered. Footnotes are not to be used for bibliographic references, but only for comments, expatiations or clarifications to the body of the text.

Direct quotations included in the text must appear in double quotation marks within the paragraph if they do not exceed two lines. Quotations of three or more lines should appear in a separate paragraph without quotation marks and inset left with a margin of 1.25cm.

Direct quotations within the text should be indicated as follows: (author’s last name, year, and number of pages cited or referred to). In the case of three or more authors, they must all be mentioned in the first quotation, and the first author’s surname followed by the abbreviation ‘et al.’ be used in subsequent ones. A reference to an author in the text without a quotation should be indicated as follows: (author’s last name, year). In the case of three or more authors, they must all be mentioned in the first quotation, and the first author’s surname followed by the abbreviation ‘et al.’ When referring to lengthy works such as books or theses, the page number(s) considered necessary to sustain the argument must be indicated.

All works cited in the text must be included in the References section; all works included in the References section should also appear in the body of the manuscript.

The References should be relevant and justified by the line of argument of the submitted text.

2.1.2 . Short articles
Works will be submitted in A4 format, Times New Roman 12, with 1.5 line spacing, and default margins set by the word processor in use: upper and lower: 2.5cm; left and right: 3cm. The length shall not exceed 10 pages, including all Bibliographic References and appendices.

They must be accompanied by a cover page indicating: the author’s name, the institution’s address, telephone and fax number(s), and e-mail address.

Short articles will deal with topics that, while not justifying the writing of a lengthier article, are of importance to the scientific community. In this sense, works will be welcome that deal with bibliographic reviews on a topic, discussions and controversies, theoretical and methodological reflections, breakthroughs in research, case studies, recent discoveries, source criticism, etc.

Works will have a title, but its translation, the summary or key words are unnecessary. Titles should clearly indicate the nature of the proposed article.

Given the brevity of these articles, a simple structure is suggested, without major subdivisions or subtitles. The formal aspects for including quotations or references will be as for Research articles.

Short articles will be evaluated by the Editorial Committee, with special attention to their originality and topicality in the field of social sciences of religion.

2.1.3 . Reviews and thesis summaries
Works will be submitted in A4 format, Times New Roman 12, with 1.5 line spacing, and default margins set by the word processor in use: upper and lower: 2.5cm; left and right: 3cm. The length shall not exceed 4 pages, including all Bibliographic References and appendices.

They must be accompanied by a cover page indicating: the author’s name, the institution’s address, telephone and fax number(s), and e-mail address.

We particularly encourage authors of master’s and doctorate theses to send in summaries clearly specifying their methodological design and textual structure. Titles of works must coincide with those of the relevant theses and shall mention the institution where they were defended. The purposes and questions or hypotheses must be clearly indicated, as must the object and scope of the study, the methodology used and the main conclusions. Bibliographic references and textual subdivisions should be kept to a minimum.

We also receive reviews of books, journals, Internet portals, scientific gatherings and other sources of scientific knowledge communication and production on the topics covered by the journal. Reviews are to be headed with the complete bibliographic data of the work according to the rules for bibliographic references below. In the case of books and journals the ISBN or ISSN number will be included where appropriate. Textual subdivisions will not be included.

Reviews will be evaluative and will represent the author’s stance towards the works discussed. They must specify their addressees or potential readers, their structure (chapters or parts for books or journals, sections in the case of webpages, etc.) and any other information deemed relevant. Reviewed works will be seen in the context of their publication and of other similar works, and original contributions made in them will be identified.

It is recommended that care be taken over of the length of the review and its relationship to other works; for more exhaustive literature reviews a short article is recommended.

Reviews and thesis summaries are not assessed by the peer review committee.

2.2 . Bibliographic references

References should be clearly distinguished from any Sources analysed in the work. These will be indicated before the bibliographical references, following the rules and abbreviations used in different archive systems. In the event of using quotation conventions, these must be explicitly stated at their first occurrence in the text.

Bibliographic references will be in alphabetical order and will be organized following a mixed system used by various Argentine publishers, academic journals and universities. Remember that the name of the city of publication should be always in Spanish (e.g. not ‘Paris’, but ‘París’; no ‘London’ but ‘Londres’, etc.). Authors should check the organization of their references before sending their manuscripts and using the criteria indicated here.
