MARMOLEJO AVENIA, Gustavo Adolfo y GONZALEZ ASTUDILLO, María Teresa. Plane surfaces area in the field of mathematics education: State of the matter. Rev. electrón. investig. educ. cienc. [online]. 2015, vol.10, n.1, pp.45-57. ISSN 1850-6666.
The study of the phenomena underlying the treatment of the concept of plane surfaces area has been of special interest in recent decades. In spite of the variety of research made and the number of raised questions, the complexity of his study is kept latent. In this article, we highlight and characterize four fronts of this complexity that have been shown in the specialized literature: the treatment and conceptualization of the area; the conservation of the area and his roll in the treatment of the concept of area; the measurement of quantities of area; and the area and his linkage with other mathematical concepts. In conclusion, we highlight the importance of characterizing a common nucleus that allows us to address the great diversity of approaches performed in the literature as a whole. We believe that visualization is the common core; we criticize this cognitive activity to be considered implicitly or tangentially, we propose a new approach and we present some questions to consider to describe and understand area`s synergy visualization/treatment and their potential in the understanding the concept of area.
