Resumen

ROODT, Adolfo R.. Bothrops ammodytoides ("yarará ñata"), the venomous snake autochthonous of Argentina. Acta toxicol. argent. [online]. 2016, vol.24, n.1, pp.68-72. ISSN 1851-3743.

Images of Bothrops ammodytoides ("yarará ñata") showing its characteristic pattern of coloration and some anatomical features, which allow its identification and differentiation from other Bothrops species of Argentina, are presented. This snake is the Southern venomous snake in the world and the only autochthonous viper in Argentina. They are small snakes, nevertheless their bite, can produce human envenoming with risk of death. Although its upturned nose is well known, some specimens do not show this feature, which does not imply that cannot be differentiated from other Bothrops species present in Argentina. Although the antivenoms commonly used in Argentina for the treatment of Bothrops snakebite do not contain Bothrops ammodytoides venom in the immunogenic mixtures used as antigen for their production, its venom is well neutralized by those antivenoms because of the high immunological cross-reactivity between the venoms of Bothrops species.
