Abstract

GALEANO, Diego. “La Gioconda en Buenos Aires" Prensa policial, detectivismo y lecturas del mundo a comienzos del siglo XX. Prismas [online]. 2021, vol.25, n.2, pp.219-227.  Epub Dec 20, 2021. ISSN 1852-0499.

“La Gioconda in Buenos Aires”: detectivism, crime news and global narratives in the early 20th century

This essay examines the reception of police cases with global impact in the Buenos Aires press. It focuses on the narratives about the theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre Museum, from the disappearance of the painting in 1911 to its recovery on the eve of the First World War: a moment marked by the apogee of the consumption of detective fiction and police chronicles in illustrated press, as well as by a reading experience and social conversation that placed the enigma, the clues and the investigation at the center of the scene. More than an exceptional interest in the stolen object and in the figure of the criminal himself, what makes the disappearance of the Mona Lisa a global police case was the triumph of detective fiction in mass culture.
